First Swing Program | KwaZulu-Natal

First Swing Program | KwaZulu-Natal

Across KwaZulu-Natal, seven schools are part of the First Swing Program under the guidance of PGA professional Sandile Msimango: North Bay Lodge, The Reunion Special School, Kwavulindlebe Deaf School, VN Naik School, Mason Lincoln Special School, RP Moodley School and Open Air School.

Under Sandile’s guidance, KwaZulu-Natal has grown into the largest First Swing Program region in South Africa, with more participating schools than any other province. This footprint reflects nearly two decades of sustained commitment to inclusive golf development.

Sandile’s journey with SADGA began in 2006 while he was working in development golf in Durban. At the time, coaching golfers with disabilities was unfamiliar territory.

“I had passion for coaching, but I had no idea how to coach a disabled player. I had to adapt.”

What started with one school gradually expanded. In the early years, Sandile travelled to schools using public transport, often carrying equipment and walking long distances to reach learners.

“Perseverance and dedication are what kept me going, and the love I developed for the kids until this present day.”

With the support of SADGA and the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union, Sandile was able to complete his PGA studies and strengthen the reach and consistency of the program across the province. The backing of KZNGU has played a significant role in supporting disability golf development in the region. Sandile also serves on the Executive of the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union, reinforcing the alignment between provincial golf structures and the continued growth of the First Swing Program.

“The support I received changed my life completely.”

School Voices from KwaZulu-Natal

Kwavulindlebe Deaf School

At Kwavulindlebe Deaf School, educators emphasise the importance of holistic development.

“Sports plays a very important role in developing a child holistically. Learners are excited to be part of the First Swing Program.”

Teachers have reported increased confidence, improved attendance and, in some cases, academic progress. They also acknowledge the consistent influence of Coach Sandile in their learners’ development.

“They have learned a lot from Coach Sandile. They have learned principles like discipline, patience and sportsmanship.”

Through structured sessions, learners are introduced not only to golf skills, but to values that support growth beyond the course.

The Reunion Special School

At The Reunion Special School, golf has created opportunity where little previously existed.

“Most of the children could not take part in any sport because of their physical disabilities. Before, they were left unable to participate. But now they can play golf.”

Since the introduction of the program, educators have seen learners gain self-confidence and pride in being able to participate in structured sport. For many, it is the first time they feel fully included in organised physical activity.

RP Moodley School

The partnership with RP Moodley School spans more than a decade and reflects sustained impact.

“The First Swing Program has provided our learners with far more than just exposure to sport. It has opened doors for confidence, independence and a sense of achievement.”

Educators report clear classroom benefits.

“Learners who participate often show improved focus, better self-regulation and increased motivation to engage in tasks. Many return to class calmer and more settled after their golf sessions.”

The indoor golf facility installed at the school has enabled consistent participation in a safe, accessible and weather-independent environment, supporting rehabilitation goals and greater functional independence.

Annual tournaments hosted by SADGA are described as a highlight.

“The sense of pride, accomplishment and belonging that comes from participation in these tournaments is invaluable.”

The school also expressed gratitude to Coach Sandile for his continued commitment and consistency over the years, recognising the meaningful role he plays within their school environment.

VN Naik School

At VN Naik School, the program has supported both learners and educators in working towards clear goals.

“The First Swing Program teaches teachers and coaches how to aim for their goals. The students grow in confidence, interest, involvement and skill development.”

Educators have observed that learners are calmer, more focused and more relaxed, with fewer behavioural challenges. The physical movement supports learners in becoming healthier and stronger, contributing positively to the broader school environment.

North Bay Lodge, Mason Lincoln Special School and Open Air School

North Bay Lodge, Mason Lincoln Special School and Open Air School continue to receive structured, regular coaching sessions as part of the First Swing Program. Through consistent engagement and adaptive coaching, learners are introduced to inclusive sport in environments that support participation, coordination and confidence.

Together, these schools contribute to KwaZulu-Natal’s position as the largest First Swing Program region in the country.

A Program Built to Last

Over nearly two decades, Sandile has seen the impact of the First Swing Program extend well beyond golf fundamentals.

“I’ve seen a positive impact in most of the kids that go through our program.”

For him, the lessons taught on the course are foundational. Discipline, focus, patience, integrity, humility, respect and sportsmanship shape character as much as performance.

Working with learners with disabilities requires adaptability and simplicity.

“As a coach, you have to adapt and work with what you have. I like to keep everything simple.”

With the continued support of SADGA and the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union, the First Swing Program in KZN has developed into a sustainable model for inclusive golf development. Looking ahead, Sandile hopes to see all 14 Golf Unions actively involved in disability golf and the creation of a future SADGA Interprovincial Challenge.

More than twenty years on, the work continues with the same focus on inclusion, consistency and opportunity.

“Passing my sincere gratitude to SADGA for giving me a purpose in life.”

With appreciation to Coach Sandile Msimango and the KwaZulu-Natal Golf Union for their continued support in growing the First Swing Program across the province.
