Emil Maehler

Emil Maehler

Emil Maehler is the kind of person who lights up every room—or, in his case, every driving range and golf course he steps onto. Born with spastic cerebral palsy, Emil has spent more than 20 years mastering the game of golf, becoming an inspiring force and a proud Ambassador for the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA). But Emil’s story is so much more than golf; it’s about determination, connection, and finding joy in every moment.

Emil communicates differently from most people. Unable to speak, he relies on sign language and his trusty mobile device to express himself. These tools allow him to build meaningful relationships and share his passion for golf and life with those around him. His resilience and unique way of connecting with others leave a lasting impact on everyone he meets.

A Journey Through Golf

Emil first discovered golf in 2005 during a lesson in Amanzimtoti, and it was love at first swing. Over the years, he has refined his game under the guidance of dedicated coaches. Sandile at the Durban University Driving Range laid the foundation, and eight years with Martin Smitt at Mt. Edgecombe Country Club helped Emil push his skills to new levels. For the past two years, he’s worked with Chinell Becker, who describes Emil as a hard worker with a contagious energy.

“Coaching Emil is a privilege,” says Chinell. “He brings such positivity to the range. His drive and work ethic inspire everyone around him, and he never gives up—no matter what life throws his way.”

A Special Bond

One of the most cherished aspects of Emil’s journey in golf is the bond it has strengthened with his father, Bryan Maehler. Golf has given them a shared passion and countless unforgettable moments together.

“Our time on the golf course has been so special,” Bryan reflects. “It’s not just about playing the game—it’s about creating memories, traveling to beautiful courses, and enjoying time together. Watching Emil grow, not just as a golfer but as a person, is something I’ll always treasure. I’m incredibly proud of him.”

Emil’s impact isn’t confined to their time together. Bryan shares how people often approach him to say how inspired they are by Emil’s tenacity and perseverance, with some even crediting Emil for motivating them to improve their own golf games.

For Emil, these connections and experiences mean the world. “Golf has given my dad and me a special time together that I hold close to my heart. I’d love for us to play golf in Scotland one day—it’s a dream I hope comes true.”

More Than Golf

Emil’s talents extend beyond the fairway. At home, he is a skilled watercolour artist, creating beautiful, intricate pieces that showcase his creativity and unique perspective. His art, like his golf, reflects his resilience and ability to find beauty in every challenge.

As an Ambassador for SADGA, Emil exemplifies the organisation’s mission to empower people with disabilities through golf. He credits SADGA for not only introducing him to incredible opportunities but also helping him form lifelong friendships. “The South African Disabled Golf Association has opened up a whole new world for me,” Emil shares. “I’ve met amazing people, played at some of South Africa’s top courses, and built relationships I’ll treasure forever.”

Emil is quick to recognise the support he has received along the way. Among those he mentions is Lily from SADGA, whose encouragement and belief in him have been a steady source of motivation. Emil values the role she has played in helping him navigate his journey in golf and beyond.  a longtime supporter of Emil’sconstant

Inspiring Others by Example

Emil’s journey isn’t defined by his challenges but by how he chooses to overcome them. Whether through his relentless drive to improve on the course, his artistic expressions at home, or the meaningful connections he forms wherever he goes, Emil is an example of what can be achieved with perseverance and passion.

For those who meet him, Emil isn’t just a golfer or an artist—he’s proof that hard work, determination, and the support of loved ones can inspire greatness in everyone.
