Preparation for the 2019 SADGA Provincial Challenge at Magalies Park Golf Club can begin in earnest after the lineups for the March 1-3 event were finalised.
This year’s event carries extra significance. 2019 will mark the tenth-playing of the Provincial Challenge which features teams from Western Province, Gauteng and the Rest of the Country respectively.
The top six available players are selected from the South African Disabled Golf Association Rankings based on the players’ Handicap Indices as of 1 January 2019. This year, all three six-man teams will be required to have at least one deaf and one blind golfer in their ranks, a change which SADGA Operations Manager Lily Reich is thrilled about.
“South African disabled golf is in a great place at the moment and the inclusion of blind golfers in the Provincial Challenge is a testament to our continued growth,” says Reich.
“Inclusivity is the cornerstone of our philosophy and so allowing blind golfers the opportunity to represent their provinces was the logical next step in the evolution of the Provincial Challenge.”
Three-time defending champions Western Province will be skippered by Pieter Verwey while Reinard Schuhknecht and Louis Fortmann will lead Gauteng and the ROCS teams respectively.
Western Province’s firm grip on the trophy in recent years means their counterparts will need to dig deep over the two rounds if they are to deny the men from the Cape a fourth successive triumph.
