Watts, Reich show improvement at G4D Open
Thursday, 11 May 2022: David Watts fired an impressive round of 75 while leg-amputee Trevor Reich carded 85 as both bettered their opening day efforts in round two of the inaugural G4D Open at Woburn Golf Club on Thursday.
David Watts played a far steadier second round, improving upon his first round score by a whopping 10 shots.
He began his day with a run of three straight pars. Despite following a double-bogey 7 at the 4th with bogeys at the 5th and 7th holes, he made the turn in 40, bettering his opening day effort by four shots.
But it was on the back-nine that Watts hit his straps. The Les Autres recorded his first birdie of the day at the par-5 10th. Two pars followed before a second red-number at the par-3 13th. Despite dropping a shot at the next, Watts bounced back immediately with yet another birdie at the 15th. Back-to-back pars followed and despite closing with a bogey, Watts played his second-nine in one-under 35 to sign for a round of 75.
Watts attributed his marked improvement to a better ball-striking performance.
“I hit a few more greens and it makes scoring a lot easier than trying to get it up at down,” said Watts.
As for his plan for the final round, the Les Autres golfer is eager to soak up the experience.
“What will be will be, just trying to hit one shot at a time and enjoy the experience.”
Leg-amputee Reich had a tough time of it to begin with as he managed just three opening-nine pars, at the 5th, 6th and 7th. Double-bogeys at the 2nd and 8th meanwhile and four further dropped shots saw him make the turn in 44.
He began the inward-nine brightly with three pars in a four-hole stretch but he saw his solid play undermined by a bogey at the 12th and a double-bogey at the 14th. Two closing bogeys saw Reich sign for a round of 85, improving upon his first round score by one stroke.
With one round remaining of this momentous tournament both Watts and Reich will be eager to finish their respective campaigns on a high!
