The SADGA team earned a historic first victory in the Gauteng North Handicap League after beating hosts Blue Valley Golf Club 2.5-1.5 on Sunday.
2021 marks the first year that the SADGA has entered a team into an inter-club league. The season began brightly with a drawn encounter against Irene Country Club. Though some narrow defeats followed in the ensuing weeks, the talent within the squad was never in doubt and on Sunday the players delivered on their immense promise.
Johan Kotze and Basil Mann gave their side the perfect start, earning an emphatic 5&3 win in the top-match.
Though Jabu Price-Moor and Jontey Kotze came up empty-handed, Virgil Foster and Jan Potgieter ensured the SADGA team edged in front once again after securing a half-point.
Dean Ferreira and Giel Vermeulen put the seal on a famous victory when they blew their opponents away 6&5. On the team’s triumph, Mann said it was the players’ grit and determination which helped them get over the line.
SADGA Executive Director Craig Moorgas congratulated the team on their outstanding achievement.
“This will go down as one of the greatest days in the SADGA’s history. For our golfers to earn a victory over able-bodied golfers is nothing short of exceptional and is testament to the talent and strength of character our golfers possess,” Moorgas remarked.
“On behalf of everyone at the SADGA, I’d like to congratulate all of the players and I’m sure that this victory will serve to inspire the rest of our membership to pen their own chapter in the history of the SADGA in the coming months and years.”
The team’s next match is against Zwartkop Country Club 1 on Sunday the 14th of March.
