Reich, Watts struggle at weather-hit G4D Open

Wednesday, 10 May 2022: South Africans David Watts and Trevor Reich fought the elements en route to rounds of 85 and 86 respectively in the first round of the inaugural G4D Open at Woburn Golf Club on Wednesday.

Not even inclement weather and a suspension in play midway through the afternoon could dampen the spirits of the 80-player field which assembled on a banner day for golf for the disabled. The establishment of the G4D Open in 2023 is testament to just how far golf for the disabled has come in recent years and is certainly a feather in the cap of the governing bodies of the 18 participating countries as well as The Royal & Ancient.

Reich, a seasoned campaigner on the international disabled golf stage, endured a difficult start to his day as he carded three bogeys and a double-bogey in his first five holes. A second double-bogey at the par-3 7th and a bogey at the 8th saw the leg-amputee make the turn in 44.

Reich’s inward half was far steadier with pars at the 10th before three in a row from the 15th. Bogeys at the 12th and 13th meanwhile were sandwiched between double-bogeys at the 11th and 14th. A closing bogey saw Reich sign for a round of 86 but an improved back-nine will no doubt leave him hopeful of a better showing on day 2.

Like Reich, Watts too went out in 44 characterised by double-bogeys at the 5th and 7th along with bogeys at the 1st, 3rd and 9th.

Welcome pars at the 10th and 12th followed before two more at the 15th and 17th. Bogeys at the 11th, 13th, 14th and 16th undermined Watts’ reparation efforts while a closing bogey meant he ultimately signed for a round of 85 to occupy 28th-place.

Brendon Lawlor and England’s Kipp Popert lead the way after the pair carded opening rounds of 2-under par 70.
