Uitenhage, 11 October 2021: The Canon Open Series will have a little international flavour added to it after Costa Rican golfer Leyner Ramirez Alfaro committed to the Canon Port Elizabeth and Canon Joburg Opens respectively.
Over the years the Canon SA Disabled Golf Open has attracted players from a number of countries who have made their mark on South African shores.
One need look no further than past champions Chad Pfeifer and Mike Browne to realise these players don’t merely make up the numbers either.
This year however- the first year of the Canon Open Series - international participation has been hampered by Covid-19 travel restrictions so Ramirez Alfaro’s presence in the respective fields is welcome indeed.
The leg-amputee - who plays off a handicap Index of 8.5- will compete in the Physically-Disabled Strokeplay division in Uitenhage and Joburg respectively.
While all of the competitors in the first two events of the Canon Open Series are known quantities- there will be a kind of mystique surrounding Ramirez Alvaro at the final two events of the series.
Time well tell whether he is able to emulate the likes of Browne and Pfeifer but the SADGA and Canon South Africa are thrilled to welcome Leiner Ramirez Alfaro to the final two events of the Canon Open Series.
