The May Western Cape Provincial Day was held at Rondebosch Golf Club on Sunday.
Though the greens had recently been hollotined, there were a few fantastic scores recorded. The best round of the day belonged to Deaf golfer Daren Hanekom. Playing off a 5-handicap, the PGA of South Africa student played some superb golf en route to a 71. His 42-point stableford tally earned Hanekom bragging rights among both his fellow Deaf golfers and the physically-disabled contingent as well. Charles Williams – who is also studying towards his PGA of South Africa degree – carded 32 stableford points to secure runner-up spot in the Deaf division.
It was also fantastic to have a quartet of Deaf First Swing Program golfers in the field. Dominican School For the Deaf pupil Sisa Nkomo was the standout performer among the FSP golfers, carding an impressive 29 points.
Simo Mdudu, fresh off his great showing at the SADGA Provincial Challenge, tied for first among the physically-disabled competitors. The leg-amputee – who won his Provincial Challenge Singles match 9&8 – ended the day with a 32-point tally to cap a memorable 10 days of golf. Les autres golfer Shaun Vos meanwhile also played some great golf as he matched Mdudu’s stableford tally. In third-place was Dean Howes who amassed 29 points.
Team South’s victorious non-playing captain Pieter Verwey found himself in a logjam in the able-bodied division. Having scored 34 points, the Devonvale Golf Estate member saw his haul matched by three other golfers – Ben Thorne, SADGA chairman Enver Hassen and Enver’s guest, Mr Alli.
The SADGA wishes to thank Rondebosch Golf Club for their great hospitality – having labels on the golf carts was a thoughtful touch and one which the golfers appreciated. The preferential rates also contributed to what was a wonderful day out on the course. Thank you as always to Western Province Golf for their ongoing support of disabled golf in the Western Cape, we appreciate your contribution.
Finally, to all the golfers who teed it up, thank you for playing and we look forward to seeing you at the next Provincial Day at Stellenbosch Golf Club on the 13th of June.
