Press Release
Disabled young golfers to compete in KZN Inter Schools Festival
Johannesburg, South Africa. August 2019 – The South African Disabled Golf Association’s (SADGA) First Swing Program is gearing up for its fourth annual Inter Schools KwaZulu-Natal Festival at Mount Edgecombe Country Club on 3 September 2019.

The event will see aspiring young golfers with various disabilities compete against each other in a spirited competition on a modified golf environment. Sponsored by Canon South Africa, the FSP Inter Schools Festival is buoyed by the success of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 festivals and SADGA’s vision to acknowledge young disabled golfers and inspire them to continue reaching for their dreams.

FSP offers a platform which exposes children with disabilities to the game of golf. The primary focus of the program is on rehabilitation and psychological development of disabled children. The program is operational in more than 35 schools across the country, with some 750 children benefitting every week. The program also arranges this inter-schools tournament to give the young players an opportunity to participate in competitions. Provincial tournaments are also hosted annually for the elite golfers.

All of the young players competing in the FSP Inter Schools Festival are from KwaZulu-Natal based schools where the program is run.  Each of the participating schools will have 10 physically disabled children competing. They will play on a modified golf course that will be created for the children on the putting and chipping areas at Mount Edgecombe Country Club which has played host to the Inter Schools festival for the past three years.  The participating schools include Mason Lincoln, Open Air, and RP Moodley.
Canon SA has been closely involved with the SADGA since 2001. Since then, the company’s involvement has continued to grow and blossom, with its support focusing specifically on the First Swing initiative and the South African Disabled Golf Open. Canon SA helped sponsor the inaugural First Swing Inter Schools Festival in 2016 and continues to enthusiastically support it along with the other regional festivals taking place in Pretoria and Cape Town.  “We are delighted to once again be part of bringing the FSP Inter Schools festivals to fruition. These competitions are immensely spirited. The children revel at the chance to be part of the action and show off their golfing skills. It is gratifying to see how their confidence and abilities have grown over the years,” says Dana Eitzen, Corporate and Marketing Communications Executive of Canon SA.

The festival will kick off at 10:00 at Mount Edgecombe Country Club. Spectators are welcome to come and cheer on the young players.
