SADGA Visually Impaired golfer Charlene Pienaar chats about her impresive runner-up finish in the C-division of the Ekurhuleni Championship at Glendower Golf Club.
When I started to play golf I always had a dream to participate in an amateur’s event but never thought it was possible. Thank you to the Ekurhuleni board, Lizette and the members for allowing me to participate at Glendower.
A big thank you to the South African Disabled Golf Association for sponsoring me! All of this were only possible with the grace of God, the continuous support and motivation of my parents including all the wonderful ladies from Benoni Lake Club. A big thank you to two special ladies from Benoni Lake – Rachel Howard as well as Jenny Greef. Hats off to my caddie, Jurie Mare – thank you for your continuous support and guidance during this event, without you this was not possible.
Glendower is ranked second in South Africa. The course is lush green and challenging. The two days were extremely competitive. The first day were cold and rainy. I struggled in the first round but in the second round everything fell into place and I made 39 points. You can just imagine my excitement for the day! The second round were cold, windy without rain, the greens were a bit faster and I made 32 points.
In the beginning of the tournament, I hoped to be part of the top-10. But when they informed me I came second in the C-division, you can just imagine my surprise as this was so unexpected. This is an epic event which I will always remember.
I hope to participate in more amateur events going forward and to make people aware that sometimes things happen in life you don’t have control over. Any person at any given time can become disabled
Don’t let your disability put a hold or limit on your dreams, aspirations in life. Stand up. Be brave. Through faith, determination and hard work you can overcome any challenge, any obstacle that comes your way!
Thank you
