Canon SA helps SADGA to give young disabled golfers a sporting chance

Johannesburg, South Africa. 10 February 2014 – Canon South Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to developing the country’s disabled golfers, renewing its sponsorship to the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA).  Canon has this year also added a donation of printing equipment to some of the beneficiary schools that form part of the Association’s First Swing Program.

According to Michelle Janse van Vuuren, Canon SA’s Marketing Manager Canon SA is honored to continue their association with SADGA in 2014. “Over the years, our involvement with the Association has continued to grow and blossom. This year in particular, much of our sponsorship will benefit the First Swing initiative, which focuses on instilling a passion for sport and golf skills in young school children who have disabilities. We consider this to be an extremely worthy cause.”

“Playing golf has exceptional rehabilitation and emotional benefits for people with disabilities. SADGA provides great opportunities for them to learn the game of golf and participate in organized events and competitions where they get to pit their skills against other golfers. It is heartening to be involved with SADGA’s efforts.”

Canon’s association with SADGA stems back to 2001 when it sponsored a small prize. In 2012 Canon sponsored the media prize for a photographic competition, which ran in tandem with the annual Nedbank South African Disabled Golf Open at Langebaan Country Estate. The competition, organized by SADGA, the hosts of the golf tournament, attracted entries from a number of sports photographers and served to recognize their efforts to capture the defining moments of the 2012 open.

In addition to a financial broadcast sponsorship for SADGA in 2013, Canon also sponsored fourteen digital compact cameras towards the most talented disabled juniors who participated in the SA Disabled Golf Open as part of the First Swing Camp Programme.

Entrenching its commitment to the First Swing programme, Canon SA has this year donated printers and ink cartridges to aid the administration of the First Swing project in eleven schools, which cater for children with disabilities.  The schools include Forestown, Hope and Soshonguvwe in Gauteng; Filia and Eros schools in the Western Cape; Martie Du Plessis school in Bloemfontein; Eden school and De La Bat College in the Boland; RP Moodley school in Kwazulu Natal as well as Carpe Diem school in the Southern Cape.
